Scout

Australian Shepherd · 45 lbs · Trail Blazer

Scout is a young, high-energy Australian Shepherd who serves as the heart and chief product tester of Packs & Paws. Sporting a classic blue merle coat with marbled grey and black patches, Scout is hard to miss on the trail—especially with his striking heterochromia (one ice-blue eye and one amber-brown) and his signature faded orange trail bandana.

Whether we are alpine trekking in the Pacific Northwest, sleeping under the stars, or hitting the road for a cross-country adventure, Scout is always leading the way. If a harness chafes, a tracker loses signal, or a sleeping pad punctures, Scout's behavior tells us everything. He represents the voice of the dogs we write for.

I started Packs & Paws because I was frustrated by the state of online pet reviews. Most sites are either AI-generated search-scrapers or massive media outlets writing generic lists of products they've never seen, let alone tested.

With a background in adventure camping and hiking (having previously run the adventure moto site Bikes & Bays), I wanted to apply the same level of rigorous, no-nonsense testing to active dog gear. When you take a dog miles into the backcountry, gear failure isn't just an inconvenience—it's a safety hazard.

My goal is to give you clear, objective, and deeply researched recommendations so you can confidently bring your dog along on your next adventure, knowing their gear will hold up.

Our Editorial Promise

How We Stay Honest

We believe trust is earned through transparency. Here is the framework we follow for every guide and review on this site:

No Sponsored Bias

We do not accept paid sponsorships to review products, and we never let brands pay us to rank them higher. If a product fails, is unsafe, or doesn't justify its price, we say so.

Vet-Checked Safety

We don't make medical or safety claims lightly. Every advice article regarding dog physiology, trail safety, weight limits, or heat index is thoroughly cross-checked with veterinary research and expert guidelines.

No Fake "Hands-On" Claims

We don't pretend Scout has personally tested 30 different GPS trackers or dog boots just to write a review. The products Scout uses are clearly labeled. For everything else, we analyze manufacturer specifications, veteran owner reports, and material specs to provide a clear, aggregated analysis.
